Unraveling Embodied White Supremacy:
A Contemplative Journey through Restorative Yoga
with Alex Devaux
We each play an integral role in the work of healing our world. As we continue to find ourselves in uncertain and often daunting times, each of us is needed in the pursuit of justice, healing and collective liberation.
For those of us moving through the world in white bodies, it is central to our work in the world to understand how systems of intergenerational harm have embedded themselves within our bodies. Without these understandings and skillful action, we perpetuate violence against BIPOC communities and, to a different extent, ourselves, in the denial of our own humanity.
In this four week series, we will explore some of the ways that white supremacy culture nests itself within our bodies, as guided by the tenets of white supremacy culture. Inspired by the work of Dr. Gail Parker and Resmaa Menakem, we will use restorative yoga as the pathway into the body to slow down and unravel how themes like perfectionism, urgency and individualism show up in our bodies and lives. The class hour will primarily be used to get into the body and explore what arises, with some time for discussion and community building.
This course is designed with the belief that if we do not learn how to hold ourselves with grace in our learning and unlearning, we cannot show up in service of our suffering world. Our global society needs all of us to heal.
The series is meant to be a beginning step in what facing and healing embodied supremacy and racial trauma can look like for white bodied folxs. It is geared towards white bodied folxs who would like to expand their yoga practice to life off the mat, as well as those who have done ‘brain work’ around anti-racism, but not necessarily felt into their embodied experience. All are welcome.
This series will be held in-person at the Chace Mill.
50% of the revenue for the series will be donated to the Burlington Yoga Equity Project.
